Why Taare Zameen Par Deserves an Oscar For India and Chake De India Does Not!

There were two very good movies made in 2007, Chak De India and Taare Zameen Par, and Taare Zameen Par has paved the way for an Oscar entry. There are people who feel Chak De India is also Oscar material. However one should know that Chak De India has a subject that has been dealt with many times in Hollywood commercial cinema. The story of an under-dog team winning a match is nothing new to Hollywood. There have been stories in which boxers, ice-hockey players, foot ball players, rugby players, and basket ball players who were underdogs have braved stiff opposition to win matches. So the story of a 12 girl hockey team who win the world championship, which is eye candy to India is actually bland to the Academy of Motion Pictures.
Taare Zameen Par however has an Oscar friendly topic. The United States is sensitive to issues of learning disabilities(like dyslexia) and love heart tugging subjects which are high on quality as well as emotions, even if the story may not be really wholesome. This is what TZP has, it has a touching subject which touches the right chords in an Indian and a Westerner's heart. In fact, you can say TZP appeals to universal emotions. Considering it is a story of a 8 year old child, it will definitely carry wholesome impact. Taare Zameen Par has one of the best child performances ever in the world, by Darsheel Safary. One can also safely say that the movie is a noteworthy film on dyslexia(even Wikipedia has quoted it), a sensitive issue in the US.
As Aamir Khan says if films like Rain Man (a film on autism) and Forrest Gump(a film on a person of low IQ who embraces fame and fortune), then even Taare Zameen Par deserves an Oscar. We have done our take on the movie the jury has to think like Aamir Khan does. Let's see if Aamir Khan can get an Oscar this time on Indian 'Zameen'.
